Microbial Physiology

A Great Book to Understand BacteriaI used this book in a course by the same name and it was a helpful source to read. It gives good explanations that sometimes are a little too short. I still use this book and it is a great place to jump off from when trying to understand a topic. One problem is that somtimes it gets too much into the biochemical steps and falls away from the concepts of the pathway. But all in all, it is a helpful book if this is your field or if you want to start and understand bacteria from a entire bacteria level and not just one gene at a time. The parts on genetics and genetic regulation of systems (focusing on transcriptional regulation) are also great. It is due for an update though.

The Monarchs Are Flying: A Novel
Published in Hardcover by Firebrand Books (December, 1987)

Lesbian, Wife Abuse, and a Small TownOne of the things I often dislike about murder mysteries is that they involve characters that I can't relate to (i.e. too NYPD Blue or even worse L.A. Law). This is a compelling story of a lesbian living in a small town who is falsely accused of murdering a former girlfriend who has since married a violent wife abuser. Did I mention it takes place in a small town (the people in it are small and narrow-minded) where being a lesbian in their eyes makes her guilty. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever felt like an outsider and was made to feel like one.

Money, Sex and Power the Challenge of the Disciplined Life
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (August, 1985)
Average review score:

engaging and enlightening"The Challenge of the Disciplined Life" by Richard Foster is a very good book. Foster writes about how modern Christians can face the temptations of money, sex and power in the modern world. Foster proposes the use of the spiritual disciplines as weapons in this battle. As with all of Foster's other books, this one is very well written. Foster is the master of engaging his readers; all the while enlightening them. I recommend this wonderful book for everyone walking the path of the Spiritual journey.

Mooki's Secret (Forest Tales Series)
Published in Hardcover by Zondervan (July, 1998)
Average review score:

Mookie teaches us that being different is a gift !"Mookie's Secret" is a well written story that touches on some serious issues, namely "abandonment" AND "fear of being different".Upon reaching an orphanage, Mookie, the little beaver is warmly accepted but is afraid that the other critters will discover his embarrasing secret and will make fun of him. After hearing a joke, Mookie's secret is revealed - his laughter reveals his humongous teeth. Not knowing that he is a beaver and that he is SUPPOSED to have big teeth, he runs away only to find other beavers. His newly found friends help him to discover that his secret is really a blessing rather than something to be ashamed of. Mookie returns to the orphanage and uses his unique gift and newly found confidence to become part of the group in a new and exciting way. ILLUSTRATIONS ARE BEAUTIFUL!

The Morphodite
Published in Paperback by New American Library (January, 1985)
Average review score:

An untraceable assasin, let loose!Focused on a planet similar to our own, Oerlikon is home to an 'unchanging' society where change has been deliberately and subtly reinforced. Certain revolutionary elements of this so-called 'unchanging' society create a unique person that can actually morph (change) into another sex. This change is one-way and irrevocable -- the perfect assasin! This assasin can change its original shape and escape, unsuspected. This assasin's mission is to find the one person on the planet that will drastically change the course of society -- though to which direction, no one knows. I found it to be an original and intriguing book, well worth reading!

Mrs. Washington and Horowitz, Too (Wheeler Large Print Book Series)
Published in Hardcover by Wheeler Pub (January, 1994)
Average review score:

A funny but awakening view on an elder's lifeSociety seems to have a pre-conceived notion that the elders should simply fade away, after they have served their 'term' through those youthful & agile years. However, just like everyone else, their satisfaction & happiness rely on their sense of completeness (to be depended upon & needed once again) & yes, to be loved. This book takes a look at what the elders (have to)do to cover those long barren hours in their twilight years..often drowning in senile depression should they fail to find something worthy of their time & attention. However, it was presented in a funny way --- what with Mrs. Washington playing an over-aged 'Cupid' to two elder lovey-dovies, & later on becoming a victim of 'granny romance' in the end. Mr. Horowitz' rich blend of characters is just as lovable as well.
Quick breads rise using baking powder or soda (meaning no kneading and rising) and they offer some of the easiest baking out there. They need not be relegated to breakfast or dessert, either. There is a section on savory quick breads that would be appropriate alongside soups or entrees. Take a quick bread to your next gathering and you may well receive more credit than is due!
If you've never had a Storey cooking bulletin, you will find them brief, but focused and well-done.
